Frequently asked questions

Here is a collection of frequently asked questions to provide you with all the information you need about our bespoke furniture services.

At HDJ Furniture, nothing is standardised or off-the-shelf. Every project is designed around your home and lifestyle. We measure to the millimetre, adapt to awkward spaces, and manufacture and spray-finish in our own Surrey workshop. Because every detail is controlled in-house, your furniture is genuinely unique — not just customised, but truly bespoke.

Yes. High-quality fitted furniture maximises storage, improves functionality, and enhances the overall look of your home. Bespoke kitchens and fitted wardrobes are especially appealing to buyers in Surrey and London’s competitive property market, making them a worthwhile investment as well as a lifestyle upgrade.

The cost depends on size, design, and finishes. As a guide, wardrobes typically start from around £3,000, while bespoke kitchens can range from £25,000 upwards. We’re transparent with pricing and provide a clear breakdown, so you know exactly what’s included.

Our quotes cover design, manufacture, finishing, and installation. Handles, lighting, and accessories can all be included at the design stage. For kitchens, we can also supply appliances and worktops if required, or we’re happy to integrate items you’ve sourced yourself. Transparency is key — no hidden extras.

We use a staged payment structure:

  • 40% booking fee (secures your slot & covers design).

  • 40% before manufacture (when materials are ordered & production starts).

  • 20% on completion.
This gives clarity and helps you manage cashflow with confidence.

Yes. We frequently collaborate with architects and designers on kitchens, wardrobes, and whole-house joinery projects. Our in-house design and spray finishing facilities mean we can deliver complex specifications with precision, while ensuring every detail is practical, functional, and beautifully finished.

We use premium materials throughout. Cabinet internals are often built from Egger MFC, valued for durability and a clean aesthetic. Externals may feature oak veneers, solid timbers, or spray-finished doors. Finishes include lacquer, stains, hand painting, spray painting with Sayerlack primers and topcoats, and even specialist effects like liquid metal.

Sprayed finishes are generally more expensive because they require more preparation to achieve a flawless, flat result. Ranked from lower to higher cost, finishes typically go: Lacquer → Stain & Lacquer → Hand Painted → Spray Painted → Liquid Metal. We’ll guide you on the best choice for your budget and aesthetic.

No — large-scale painting is not carried out on site. All hand-painting and spray finishing happens in our dedicated spray facility in Chertsey. Only small touch-ups are ever done on site, ensuring consistency, dust-free finishes, and durability.

Yes, we allow up to three revisions during the design phase at no extra cost. Additional revisions beyond this may incur a charge, which we’ll always quote before proceeding. This helps keep projects on schedule and ensures decisions are made with confidence.

We can only confirm installation dates once all design details and material selections are finalised. If approvals are delayed, this may push back your project timeline. We’ll always keep you updated, but timely decisions help us deliver on schedule.

Yes! We can match existing finishes, colors, and styles to seamlessly blend with your current interior. We offer custom stains, paints, and materials to create a cohesive look that complements your space.

We specialise in making furniture fit beautifully into challenging areas — loft eaves, sloping ceilings, under-stairs storage, and uneven walls. Because every cabinet and panel is built to measure, we can turn wasted corners into functional, elegant storage.

We’re happy to phase larger projects to help with budgeting. For example, you might begin with a kitchen, then move on to wardrobes and media walls later. This approach gives flexibility while ensuring the overall design stays consistent across your home.

Most projects take 8–12 weeks from design sign-off to installation. Smaller wardrobes or media walls may be quicker, while larger kitchens or whole-house packages may take longer. We’ll always provide a clear schedule so you know what to expect.

Installation is a significant task, and some disruption is inevitable. Floors will be protected, tools will be stored carefully, and noise levels may rise during fitting. While we work cleanly and professionally, minor scuffs or marks can occasionally occur when moving large furniture. Clients are responsible for any redecorating or touch-ups outside our scope of work.

Yes. All HDJ projects come with a six-month warranty covering faults in materials and workmanship. This does not extend to natural wood movement, environmental damage, fair wear and tear, misuse, or third-party alterations. We also provide aftercare advice and remain available for adjustments or touch-ups if ever needed.
